In South Korea that is the country most quickly moving into an aged (2019) and super-aged (2026) society, an average life expectancy of 100 years is become a reality. In this regard, many different problems have been occurred, including the increased incidence of senile dementia, the increased public burden of treatment and management on the people, the worsening fiscal balance, the decreased labor productivity, the increased social costs for diseases, and problems concerning care of the elderly. Not only South Korea but also many other countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan declared “war on dementia” and undertook to prepare measures for it. Additionally, the necessity of research and development of diagnosis, treatment, and care of dementia has been highlighted. In particular, the reduction of cognitive abilities imposes a heavy burden on others as well as oneself.
In order to resolve these social problems, the National Research Council of Society and Technology (NST) suggested a new research paradigm in which experts from each field gather with government-funded researchers as central figures and seek for solutions.
The Convergence Research Center for DTC of Dementia is a future-leading research center adopting a sunset research system in which researchers of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine (KIOM), and the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) gather in a host institution (the Korea Institute of Science and Technology; KIST) to conduct research in two phases for 6 years, with the purpose of developing early prediction, treatment and patient care technique. The Convergence Research Center aims to increase the efficiency of the development of diagnosis, treatment, and care system, and ultimately to produce good results that can be transferred and commercialized to companies, by sharing the core technologies and infrastructure of each institute; exchanging human resources, idea, and information; using the clinical outcomes of the Samsung Medical Center, the Seoul National University Hospital, and the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital; analyzing the economic feasibility of companies including YBrain, Dong-A Socio Holdings, Dong-A ST, RoBoRoBo, and Future Robot; and promoting commercialization strategies.
